Dealing with Negative Self Talk

Article by Shwetha Holla, Reiki Rays

We all do a lot of talking, to ourselves. I have a lot of conversations with myself too. When alone, it is out loud and other times they all go around in my head. But have you realised which tone you address yourself in? I didn’t for a very long time. It was only recently that I realised for the most part I talk to myself in discouraging tones. And I had been doing it for years, without realising the impact it actually had on me. Now sit back and think about it. How do you talk to yourself? In loving encouraging tones or harsh and rude tones?

Affirmations are sentences that are recited again and again till you start believing in them. In the same way, if you have been telling yourself that you are not good enough for a particular job, and you repeat it again and again in your head, visualizing how you will fail at the job, sure you will. If you are the one to constantly encourage yourself you will know the positive effects that come from it.

We have all come across people who discourage us. When this discouragement is coming from another person we have a choice of believing it and letting it affect us. But when we do it to ourselves, we have no choice but to accept that we are not good enough.

The feeling of not being “good enough” comes from a lot of factors. A traumatic childhood, having negative people around you etc. If you find talking to yourself negatively on a regular basis, try to find the main reason behind it.

Here is a simple method you can try.

The emotional mental symbol deals with our state of emotions which is an important part of who we are.

  1. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and draw a large emotional/mental symbol in the room. You can also visualise it.
  2. Now, imagine your conscious mind and subconscious mind as two different people, both parts of you.
  3. One by one, the conscious part of you will ask questions to the subconscious you. For example: Why do I feel insecure? Why do I feel I am not good enough? Why do I convince myself to stay in an abusive relationship?
It is also important to take responsibility for the situations, both past and present, than blaming others for it.
  4. You will always know the answers, the key is to acknowledge them, rather than keep them suppressed within you.
  5. Once you know the reason, you can start working on it.

The main cause of negative self talk is the feeling of “not being worth it”, in other words a major sense of insecurity. Give yourself lots of Reiki to the Root chakra. Reiki to all the chakras will work wonders too.

There is supposedly a tribe in the Solomon Islands that circle around a tree and shout at it, to break its spirit before cutting it down. Don’t be the voice responsible for breaking your own spirit.
